Rape being justified in Thai TV dramasThailand has problems with the content of its Thai dramas or soaps. I have never set foot in a country where the content of shows is so bad, demeaning, idolizing drinking, fighting and even rape.

This is one such example. A soap opera titled “Dao Puan Din”, which is unofficially translated as “Tainted Star” airs each Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. I can tell you that Thais are glued to this programme and do not like being disturbed while watching it, I know as my girlfriend will not move.

The content of this show is pathetic and degrading, but sadly it is stereotypical as almost all other dramas shown on Thai TV have the same plots. This is a brief plot of Tainted Star.

Rinlada is the name of the lead character played by the beautiful Araya Hargett or her nickname is Chompoo, does not hesitate to do bad, bad things to her nemesis, Uamdao, the central character of the story. Rinalda goes about trying to steal her boyfriends (this is the main plot for every TV drama though). Rinalda is a step daughter who feels inferior and goes about making life hell for everyone.

The show is now coming to an end and for the final episode the Thai producers have come up with an ending to end all endings. The character is going to be raped by 12 men. The producer has defended the decision for the end of the soap.

The production crew was trying to convince the audience that Rindala “deserves” her fate. Her father was jailed; she was brought into a family in which everybody loves Uamdao the main character. Rinlada took at least two of Uamdao’s boyfriends and would kill anyone who got in her way.

The most interesting words come from the actress, who plays Rinlada. She was quoted in saying “The soap ends in the way it should. A bad girl deserves bad things. Rinlada will face gang rape to ensure a “happy ending” to this soap.”

This is what the main actress has said. How can any girl deserve to be raped by 12 men no matter how “bad” they have been? Thai soaps are filled with women being raped or attempted rape by men who are usually intoxicated or obnoxious chauvinistic pigs.

In another Thai drama called Sawan Beang. This was a 12 part drama that was just shown on screens in Thailand.

The main character is played by a superstar and heartthrob Theeradej Wongpuapan. In this drama after a roller coaster ride his character rapes the lead female’s character. He then ends up marrying her in the final episode. How could this be reality? No one with any common sense knows this would happen but many Thais think it is possible.

Don’t forget Thai laws when it comes to rape, the law has been amended just of late but a husband still cannot be charged with raping his wife. They are a married couple and no matter if he forces himself on her, he cannot be prosecuted.

Raping a minor the rapist can ask the parents for the girl’s hand in marriage, if they agree then he won’t be charged with rape of a minor. He compensates the family with a sum of money and happily goes about his life.

Thai television’s content is terrible, repetitious crap. It needs to be cleaned up and offer more positive role models for teenagers and young girls. The portraying of lead men as rich, despicable, drunk, pigheaded men with everything they need in the world needs to change. Male characters have to be portrayed in a positive way, not gun carrying money hungry fools, high on power.

I am sure other countries TV content has similar problems and I would like to here what they are from you.

If what has been stated in the article is at all true( coz I have no idea what is being telecast on Thai television), it is really demeaning, and overtly chauvinistic. No wonder, people in the West associate Thailand with cheap sex and kink! The mysticism of this beautiful country is already lost because of the hoopla created regarding flesh trade, this will make matters worse!

Hi Reshmi. If you do a search about Thai TV dramas you will see it is sadly true. The association with cheap sex is because of the infamous Pattaya and Silom and Nana areas just to name a few.

These are such a small part of a truly amazing country. When you are out in the countryside and you meet the true genuine Thai Buddhists you see that the sex trade is a small part of Thailand but it is what is constantly talked about and reported on.

I cannot understand why the same story lined dramas are made again and again. The only thing is obviously for ratings. The dramas usually have a quick life only running for 10-15 episodes and then are finished up.

Teenagers need positive role models in Thailand not what they are offering at the moment.

Your absolutely correct about roping in the right kind of role models for teenagers.

I am completely shocked to hear that a married man can rape his wife and still get away with it in Thailand and also about raping a minor. Seriously how come people are ok with all this?

Hi Nithya. Role models are lacking all across the board, not just on TV but in sports and even politicians.

The spousal rape laws are terrible, there has been an amendment just recently but to what degree I am still trying to find out.

In Thailand a husband cannot be charged for forcing sex on his wife. He can come home intoxicated and rape his wife but the law sees it as his wife’s duty to ”submit” to him.

Many Thai men have ’Mia Leks’ or small wives. This is looked upon as okay here. A Thai man can easily divorce his wife; he can divorce on the grounds of “suspected” infidelity.

Whereas a Thai wife has to have proof he is being an adulterer, she needs to show he is actually supporting the Mia Lek as him just cheating on her isn’t enough to grant a divorce.

The laws protecting minors is a disgrace, even older girls. If a man rapes a girl and she agrees to a settlement or compensation amount, then charges won’t proceed.

I have read about girls as young as 12 being raped and then their attacker marrying them and compensating the family.

I will try and find a story I read a while back from a newspaper and I will post the link in here, it is heartbreaking and disturbing to read.

There is a certain area of sociology called symbolic interactionism which sees the ways people act as being as though they were/are actors in a social theatre of sorts. The roles people adopt are largely based on their interpretations of the roles and role plays which they see around them in the media and in their social interactions with other people. If the media is perpetrating such images of rape and male sexual violence as a norm (as anything in the media may become a normalised social entity, perhaps, by virtue of the ubiquity of it’s representation in the culture), then it (i.e. the media) is itself responsible for the rapes and other crimes that it glorifies-by-drama and desensitises the population to.
